Who ever thought putting the three artists that wrote the latest top song would have ever worked alongside one another let alone create a hit pop ballod. The widely known Baradian singer, Rihanna, the infamous American rapper, Kanye West, and the honoured British musician, Paul McCartney, all got together to write and record the January 24, 2015, single, “FourFiveSeconds,” which will appear on Rihanna’s upcoming eighth studio album. The song created buzz by having Sir Paul McCartney on a track with Rihanna and Kanye West, but also when the group preformed the single at the 57th Grammy Awards that aired February 8, 2015. This track is relatable to many as it talks about the struggle of dealing with hard week and/or situation and having to hold yourself back from exploding.
The majority of the vocals are shifted between Rihanna and West, while McCartney follows with backing vocals as well as the acoustic guitar that follows the song throughout. As well as the guitar an organ, and a cello are featured in the track. The first verse, sung by Rihanna, speaks of how she has had enough of everything, and how she may need a drink. She says that if she were to speak her mind, that she would probably have to do some time in jail. A phrase that is repeated throughout the song is, “’Cause all of my kindness / Is taken for weakness.” This is a statement that follows many people around in life, as their reputation may not precede what they really are like. The chorus is built with the lyrics of, “Now I’m FourFiveSeconds from wildin’ / And we got three more days ’til Friday / I’m just tryna make it back home by Monday mornin’ / I swear I wish somebody would tell me / Ooh, that’s all I want.” Being so close to ‘wildin’ is meaning that you are close to hitting the breaking point where you just snap. Now what she is wanting someone to tell her, she doesn’t say, but by assumption it would have to be something that would help her make it through the situation without getting into trouble. The second verse is sung by Kanye West, and he speaks of waking up being an optimist and how the sunshine made him positive, but then he heard someone talking trash, and now he is just ready to spaz out on someone. The third verse is all about how someone who seems to care, is worried about the person who is having a hard time and how they are being reckless. The last verse is where West, sings about if he were to get put in jail, would the caring person pay his bail. He goes on to say how all people want to do is buy his pride that is not for sale. The song finishes with the chorus being repeated twice, and a sharp cut off.
Now this is a trio of artists that most people would not have even thought would work together, but when they were put together they ended up creating a song that most of the world’s population can relate to.
