Aerosmith – Dude (Looks Like A Lady)

Who remembers that scene from Mrs. Doubtfire, where Robin Williams, is ‘cleaning’ the house and all of a sudden we just hear the sound of Steven Tyler’s voice come through the TV singing a song that fit with the movie perfectly? I sure remember, and I can never listen to the song without seeing that specific movie scene. So I can only assume that this doesn’t just happen to me, but also that this is how many youngsters know the American hard rock band, Aerosmith, and their 1987 song, “Dude (Looks Like A Lady)”. “Dude”, was first released as the fourth single off the 1987 album, Permanent Vacation, then re-released in 1990.

While the song is mainly known for the chorus of, “That, that dude looks like a lady,” the songs real meaning is that one night in a bar, he met someone he thought was a women, but then she actually turned out to be a man. The song starts off with the lyrics of, “Cruise into a bar on the shore / Her picture graced the grime on the door / She’s a long lost love at first bite.” While he was just walking into the bar, he sees this beautiful women who caught his eye at once, and he then proceeded to go backstage with her, but she, “Then she whipped out her gun and tried to blow me away!” In the second verse, we are all taught a very valuable lesson, “Never judge a book by it’s cover / Or who you gonna love by your lover.” The song later goes on by saying that she had the body of venus, so just imagine his surprise.

This has got to be one of the most iconic songs for Aerosmith as it has been heard by their fans, as well as people who have watched certain movies or programs. Steven Tyler, even dressed up as a lady for a fake ‘American Idol’ audition, where they played this song as he exited.

The video of Tyler’s audition can be found on YouTube by many different sources.
