May 31, 2013, was an exciting day for the California indie pop band Echosmith, as they released their first single, “Cool Kids”, from their debut album, Talking Dreams. The song starts off with a quick pop beat, that then fades down when the vocals start. This song highlights what most pre-teens, teens and even some adults feel about how they fit in with others, and how they do not see themselves as one of the so called ‘cool kids’.
The song starts off with the perspective of a girl, “She sees them walking in a straight line, that’s not really her style. / And they all got the same heartbeat, but hers is falling behind. / Nothing in this world could ever bring them down. / Yeah, they’re invincible, and she’s just in the background,” This shows that this girl is looking at this superior group of people, who are not like her and she feels that she is different from them. There is mention that she is seeing them as invincible and that nothing can bring them down, while she is standing in the background just watching and wishing.
In the chorus, they say exactly what it is that this girl is thinking and what most people in her place think too, ‘”I wish that I could be like the cool kids, / ‘Cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in. / I wish that I could be like the cool kids, like the cool kids,’” Everyone is wanting to be like someone else, more specifically the people that they deem to be ‘popular’ and ‘cool.’
In the second verse, they switch into talking about what a boy is seeing and how he is feeling, “He sees them talking with a big smile, but they haven’t got a clue. / Yeah, they’re living the good life, can’t see what he is going through. / They’re driving fast cars, but they don’t know where they’re going. / In the fast lane, living life without knowing,” Here we get to see that this boy is watching these ‘cool kids,’ and he sees that they are happy and that they seem to have no cares in the world and that they do not have anything to worry about, while he is having to deal with something that they do not even bother to notice.
Altogether, this is an immense look into what goes on in today’s society when it comes to being ‘popular’ and ‘unpopular’ and wishing you were those ‘cool kids.’
